Customer Reviews
Solid PerformerI purchased this Meinl Recording Tambourine for our group as a fill accent in our mostly acoustic related music. The tambourine is well constructed and should hold up to frequent use. It has a nice, modern appearance. I usually lean toward natural materials, but decided that the modern composite materials used for the frame of this tambourine would be a good choice. The contoured padded handle is comfortable and helps relieve strain. This tambourine is not light in weight but not overly heavy either. The most important element is how it sounds. The jingles on this model are a mix of two different materials, each with a different sound. The overall impact is a little brighter than your typical tambourine, but not excessively. It provides a slightly unique accent that I think is nice. I would not consider this as a subtle accent instrument. The sound is fairly loud and clear, lending to the rhythm and, as with most instruments, should be used with sensitivity to the music. In other words, it is loud enough to be either a nice addition to the music in the hands of a skilled musician OR a distraction in the hands of someone with less sensitivity. All in all, I am very happy with the selection of this instrument.4Very nice Cajon especially at this price... see my added UpdateAs you can see from the photos, this is not an under sized cajon. I am 6-1, 195 and find it comfortable. The onlyCon I can find with this cajon is the snare is noticeable when striking bass note. Of course you cannot expect a $100 cajon(that comes with a $30 or more case) to have the separation and tonal abilities of a $300 cajon. I did find that I needed to adjust the corners, even though Meinl says ready to play no adjustment needed, to suit my tastes. Now for the Pros: Cajon is well constructed, nice rounded edges, rubber feet on bottom, sounds very good, good bass volume(the snare on bass note is not that noticeable to those listening I am told) and includes a really nice case. I find no reason to not to recommend this cajon. Even if the case were not included it outclasses anything near it's price. Look at the finish and the interior construction (visible through the rear port/sound/mike hole) in the photos I have included and I think you will purchase this cajon. Also the case as I said is really nice with nylon web straps for handles, a HD nylon zipper with metal lockable loop, cordura-like woven nylon outer for durability, thin but dense foam padding, and a less abrasive but tough nylon inner lining.Update: I was asked a question and did not reply in time. The question "are the snares adjustable"; No, there are no adjustments for the snares. There are two snares attached inside the cajon. The only adjustment without modifying the cajon is to slightly loosen the top tree screws on the cabinet front corners which will make the snare sound more apparent. For the money I think you will be hard pressed to find a better sounding cajon. No cajon in this price range has adjustable snares that I know of. I Have had many comments on the sound quality of this cajon and it has held up well through many, many sessions.5Always in my kit for 40 years! These are as good as the LP's and less expensive. Sometimes I replace the hi-hat with these guys - I cross the handles and fit both in one hand. Great for a 16th note feel, because you have a front and back cycle, easier than doing it on a hi-hat when the volume goes up - especially since I always have a vocal mic and it picks them up.I almost always use them on recordings. They definitely punctuate the feel.5Meinl Cafe Cajon for my wifeI just received my CAJON.... and it looks GREAT!Just as expectedGreetings to allI must say I was skeptical and a bit hesitant about purchasing this musical instrument online. I am a musician (bass, classical guitar, charango) & it is my preference to purchase my instruments at the store. You know, that feeling of trying out the instruments before you buy kind of thing. Anyhow...I opened up the box &, I must admit, I was surprised by the quality of the gig bag. Superb! ... Not the cheap quality material you find anywhere. Very rugged & well made. Very spacious by the way. The cajon fits perfectly in the bag. NOW, the CAJON (kah-hOwn).... BEAUTIFUL. The wine red finish makes it look sharp. He he he he. Just as expected. It completely met my expectations.Yes, I had some cajon time right there for about 5 minutes. It's got great sound. Very clear & deep where it's gotta have it. The snare is clear, also, and not over the top. Overall, this is a great product. I am very satisfied with it. BTW... it's not for me, but my wife. It's a gift for her. She loves percussion instruments and she's been asking me for a cajon for the longest time ever. I'm sure she's gonna love it.Gabbo5Great Tambourine!I purchased this tambourine, as well as another brand of tambourine, for my praise band to use at church. I really like this one, because:1. It is VERY STURDY. Our other tambourine fell apart after about a month. And it cost the same amount as this one. I would think it would be nearly impossible to lose the jingles in this one.2. The jingles are made of 2 different metals, so you get both the "regular" tambourine jingle sounds and a more bell-like jingle sound that rings/sustains for several seconds. This is a very unique sound that CAN make the tambourine sound more like it belongs in a world/international fusion band. However, I am fascinated by the sound, and I use it in our band each week.3. It does not give my hand a cramp. It has a nice padded handle as well.4. Excellent price for an excellent product. The only reason it is getting 4 stars instead of 5 is because I do think the "ring" of the brass jingles may put some people off because it sounds SO different than many tambourines, to their untrained ears. I am afraid that may limit the purchase/playing of this tambourine specifically.4Too loud for me, but that's probably goodHoly cow, are these things loud. I'm a church music director (acoustic, not praise band). We thought we needed maracas/shakers for an anthem one Sunday. Good thing we also got some egg shakers, because that's what we're using. We decided that if we needed to, say, raid the Episcopalians down the street, we could intimidate them by shaking these maracas. They're beautiful (seriously, so pretty that I've given them to my Mom to display on a shelf!), well made, precise- and clean-sounding...and did I mention they are very, very loud?5Real Maracas, made for adults, suitable for performanceI did a lot of research to find maracas for my husband that he could play in his band. There are a lot of maracas for children, and I had to filter through and find some that are meant for serious play by an adult. These are good and sturdy, comfortable to hold and loud enough to hear when he performs, even competing with screaming guitars, pounding bass and drums. I highly recommend these to musicians and anyone who wants high-quality maracas.5Slow shake...I got this to use with my Meinl Slaptop, and I really want to love it - but try as I might, I can't get a quick, sharp shake out of it. I think - and this is just personal opinion and taste - that the chamber is about twice as big as it needs to be, so when you want a "chic" out of it, you REALLY have to tap your foot hard and in a big motion. Maybe I just don't know how to use it - but there were no specific instructions on how it was different from any other shaker... so.... as much as I want to love it... 3 stars is all I can give it.3Lightweight and rich sound!Purchased this cajon to be played in a church band. The cajon itself is lightweight which is good since it is frequently moved about. However, it doesn't mean that it's cheaply made. It is firmly and solidly constructed. The wood and materials are very high quality as it delivers a very rich sound which fills the room. Little force is needed to create a rich loud boom. Needless to say, the carrying case that it comes with is incredibly useful for transporting it while protecting it from the elements. Overall, I was highly impressed by the quality of both the structure and the sound of this cajon and for the price, I would definitely recommend the Meinl Cajon to anyone in the market for a similar instrument.5Cheap velcrow strap.Unlike the foot tambourines on the market that use elastic bands to secure them to your foot, this foot shacker uses a velcro strap. This is a terrible choice because shoes are often shaped like a triangle; starting out skinny at the toes, but getter wider as you move backwards towards the midsole. This product is meant to be strapped to the toe cap, where musicians can use it by tapping their toes. BUT with every shake the product is essentially working its way loose, as it slips down further and further towards the front toe cap. Eventually it falls off (often mid-song). Additionally, the strap is made from very, very cheap material. The sides fray from the entire length of the strap, leaving fly-away black threads to tangle and trap within the velcro teeth.I would suggest finding/buying a different product, rather than this specific one.***UPDATE***Changing rating from 2 stars, to 1 star! The strap is so cheap it finally just broke, but not at the fraying middle of its length. It broke from 1 of the 2 connection points to the main body. Therefore it can't be repaired are re-tied! Do not buy this. It is complete junk.1
