    Another Great Album from TobymacHow does he keep doing it?It's been way too long coming, but TobyMac delvers another great album that was worth the wait! I am continually surprised when an artist delivers great material time and time again, and TobyMac is an excellent example. I've been a TobyMac fan since the early days of dcTalk and it's great to hear what first attracted me to dcTalk and hip-hop sounds back in the early 90s grow and mature and Toby continues to evolve his sound in a way that fits in to the changing mainstream. Christian artists can get a lot of flack for "ripping off" mainstream artists, but Toby's blend of hip-hop, R&B, and Soul - and lately, electronic influences - keep him sounding fresh amidst artists who fall in to genres rather than defy them.It's also great to hear Toby's son yet again on this album - he's been guesting in songs since he could barely put words together and now here he is on "Mac Daddy" sounding much older and like a lil' T-Mac himself! I'm looking forward to seeing if TruDog gets his own solo album.Lyrically, TobyMac hasn't digressed at all - if anything, his lyrics have also continued to mature as he delivers line after line of fun, thoughtful, and even introspective lyrics all while maintaining the message that Christ is King.5I think some of his other albums are a lot better -like "Momentum"I bought this because it received a Grammy. I don't know why it did. I think some of his other albums are a lot better -like "Momentum". I think it has to do with "Momentum" being more creative, whereas this album is more homoginized air play kind of music, something that the people at the Grammys would vote for.3I love the Kids Love itI bought this CD because of the songs 'Steal my Show' and 'Me Without You'. I'm glad I went ahead and got the whole CD and not just those two songs. My kids love the CD. They love the songs and that's all we've been hearing over the weekend. It is amazing how fast they have learned their favorite songs. Note they are 5,3, and 2. I love that it is music I don't have to censor and find clean versions of but that still has catchy beats and lyrics. It makes me smile to hear my kids walking around asking God to steal their show proclaiming him as a rock star.5Toby's BackIt's obvious that Toby has taken some creative tangents on this record as compared to his work on Momentum and even some of her later releases. One can hardly blame him. Moving away from rap/hip hop towards more of a pop sound was probably inevitable considering what gets played on the radio and what becomes hits. While older fans long for the rap of days gone by, the mainstream Christian consumer obviously likes the pop sound. The fact that this album debuted at #1 on Billboard (the first Christian album to do so in 15 years) proves that fact.If you can put aside your feelings about what you maybe hoped the album would sound like and listen to it for what it is, you'll love it. All the classic Tobymac sound is there. Sure, it's a little poppish in places and there's not a ton of hard rap, but what Toby does, he does well. It won't take long before you'll be singing the hooks right along with him and enjoying this album every bit as much as you have his previous albums.For fans of Toby's more pop sounding songs, this album has everything you'd ever want. There's at least half a dozen songs that should be #1 on the radio. It'll be a crime if he doesn't release Favorite Song which he does with Jamie Grace. Overall, this album is a solid effort that will probably gain many more fans than it loses.5Love it and it's a good thing, because my son wants it on every day in the car!Got this for my son, who loves it. Back when Jefferson Airplane was singing "feed your head." they may have been talking about something else, but I believe you need to put good things, good ideas into your head. And guard against the other stuff. This is filled with catchy songs for everyone to love. And the rhythms are both American and Jamaican. One of these songs is very reminiscent of the 1970s stuff from Stevie Wonder.5Great Artist for christians SongsToby Mac is a Great Song Writer with the compassion for the True Christian Values5EhhhI was sorely disappointed by TobyMac's new album. The songs lack depth that I have grown accustomed. It seems like he is trying too hard to keep up with the growing trends in music and the lyrics are suffering. And no offense to his son, but I can do without him on every album. Mac Daddy is the worst, most self centered song ever! I have every TobyMac album and most DCTalk albums. I am a super fan of his and will go see him live soon, but I pray he will not perform any of the music from this album. I gave it three stars because it has a few good songs, like Unstoppable.3GiftMy kids really like Toby Mac. I purchased for a Christmas gift. We have 10 kids and they all like him.5Toby Mac is the KingToby proves once again why he's the king of hip hop. I love how versatile Toby's is. The lyrics to "Eye On It" put a fire in my spirit and makes me feel like I could run a marathon.My favorite cuts are "Speak Life," "Steal My Show," "Eye On It," and "Forgiveness." The other tracks all tie for 2nd place! Honestly, there's not a bad song on it. Even Mac Daddy is a lighthearted, hilarious song that makes me laugh as I sing it with Toby & his song.5Won't be keeping my "ears on it" much.I purchased Eye On It a couple of days ago. As a huge fan of Toby's solo work (and, of course, dcTalk), I went into the album with high expectations. His previous work has always featured an eclectic mix of pop, soul, funk, hip-hop, and rock. But none of that is to be found here, and I am sorry to say that this is the first Toby album I am truly underwhelmed by.The songs have WAY too much of an electronica/techno vibe to them. I know Toby has used electronics and samples since day one, and such sounds were used tastefully to great effect on past albums. But on this album the songs seem to rely exclusively on that, and I don't really think it works. I can barely hear the Diverse City band at all. And where in the world are the soulful backing vocals from Nirva Ready? She used to be featured quite prominently, but this time around I think I only heard two or three brief lines from her. (I was also going to inquire about the complete absence of ShonLock, but apparently he is no longer a part of the group.) The album as a whole sounds more like a continuation of his "Dubbed and Freq'd" project, only with new songs instead of remixes of previous ones.The only songs (aside from Toby's son Truett's track anyway; more on that in a bit) that really stick out to me on this album are "Forgiveness" (Lecrae is an amazing talent), "Speak Life" (has an excellent chorus that is catchy without being cheesy like that in "Me Without You") and "Thankful For You," which has a great gospel-esque sound to it a la "Lose My Soul." The lyrics as a whole are fine but don't match the caliber of those found on previous albums, and some are just plain corny. For instance, on "Made For Me" Toby sings "But I like U2, and she like Coldplay." I get that the song is dedicated to his wife and is about how strong their love is despite their differences, but that just sounds awkward and was a real "huh?" moment for me. "Family" is the obligatory sentimental ballad; unfortunately, it tries too hard and ultimately flops, coming off as more sappy than meaningful. Truett's track, titled "Mac Daddy (Tru's Reality)" this time around, is great as usual. He's grown up a lot since his first couple of appearances, and it shows in his voice! Unfortunately, in my opinion anyway, this one track outshines most of what Toby does on the album. Will we hear a "TruDog" solo album one day? I'd certainly like to!To sum up, Eye On It is not a bad album. It just isn't anything spectacular, either. The album simply does not come close to the genius of Toby's previous solo works, particularly Welcome To Diverse City and Portable Sounds. I can listen to those albums from start to finish without skipping one song. But no instant classics like "Irene," "J Train," "Catch-a-fire," "Diverse City," "One World," "Lose My Soul," "Start Somewhere," or "Changed Forever" are to be found here. There really is no, well, diversity to speak of, and I blame that on the overuse of electronics in the songs. Next time try to bring the other members of the band into play on the songs more, Toby. Save the excessive club beats and such for the next remix album. (Though I'm not sure I'd want to hear remixes of these lackluster songs anyway.)As a big fan of Toby's I couldn't bring myself to give the album 2 stars, and unfortunately half-stars aren't possible. So a 3 it is. I would have been willing to wait another handful of months, or perhaps even until early next year (which would have been three years after the release of Tonight) for a higher quality and more varied album. If you're new to Toby, I do not recommend starting with this album, even if you have heard "Me Without You" on the radio and enjoy it. Start with his first album, Momentum (2001), and work your way up. That path will give you a much better glimpse into Toby's progress in artist. Unfortunately, Eye On It is a step back.3
