Customer Reviews

didn't like the "baby it's cold outside" versionOverall decent, didn't like the "baby it's cold outside" version. They switched the parts and sped it up, either of which would have probably been ok by itself but together didn't really work for me.4Quality vinyl, great Christmas gift for your record collecting friendGot it for my girlfriend for Christmas a while back and she loves it.I don't really have too much an opinion on the album musically since I don't listen to them too much, I do like a few of the songs. But if you want to know if it's a good album I suggest listening to it before buying. However, if you're curious about the quality of the vinyl record, it's very good. My girlfriend has no complaints and she loved the gift.If you're looking for a good gift for Christmas, this is a pretty good option. I've heard their more recent Christmas album isn't as good, but if you're a She & Him fan, this is a good find.5Doesn't really fit the bill for me but fans may enjoy itI thought I'd like She & Him's Christmas album, but I find their delivery (well, mostly Zooey Deschanel's) annoying and end up skipping to the next track before the song is over. I don't think Christmas songs are the best ones to rearrange or experiment with. I, for one, prefer just hearing them as they are traditionally sung.Their rendition of Baby, It's Cold Outside is especially disappointing compared to her performance of it in Elf which probably first generated my interest in her singing. It seems to me that she sings on this album in a purposely affected way, and fails to hold notes that should be held. I wanted to hear the full power of her voice and she doesn't seem to stretch herself that far. If you already know you like She & Him's sound, then you might enjoy this. As a first introduction to them, it was not as enjoyable as I expected.3Not bad, but a little stale after 12 tracksActress/singer/musician Zooey Deschanel and producer/keyboard M. (for Matt)Ward have the pop-folksy-light jazz sound I'll put somewhere in between The Captain and Tenille and Harper's Bizarre. The best song is probably the overdone-lately 'Baby It's cold Outside, which they take the tempo up a little to keep it fresh. 'Little Saint Nick' is a nice tribute to Brian Wilson, but by the time they get there, the lack of arrangement or variety have made the whole set feel rather bland. Also absent is any original composition, which drags down an otherwise well-produced album in my view.3From the sublime to the meh...I wanted to love this album, if only because Zooey Deschanel's voice has such gorgeous texture. Think alto velvet with a thread of huskiness, and crystal clarity on higher notes. Although the album has an overall sweetness to it, Deschanel's voice is a teence flat on some of the songs, and when M. Ward is in evidence at all, he serves as a backdrop. He's better than that. The content is mostly covers of songs that have already been driven into the depths of Christmas hell, and with some notable exceptions, Deschanel & Ward bring little to those conversations. Here's the line-up: 1. The Christmas Waltz - Deschanel's clarity with a simple guitar accompaniment is lovely. 2. Christmas Day - Nothing extraordinary, and a bit bouncy, but a new one to me, which I enjoyed just for the novelty. 3. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas - Slow & sweet. 4. I'll Be Home For Christmas - No. So overdone. And done so much better by so many others. 5. Christmas Wish - Another new one to me. Sounds like it was meant to be a jingle for a Coke ad. 6. Sleigh Ride - They add nothing to the 487 other versions already out there, and perhaps detract a bit. 7. Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree - Brenda Lee wannabe & falls sadly short. 8. Silver Bells - Deschanel's voice and the accompanying ukelele are absolutely perfect for this song. The jewel in the somewhat tarnished crown of this album. 9. Baby, It's Cold Outside - Worst cover of this song I've ever heard.10. Blue Christmas - Not bad but tries too hard, with little effect.11. Little Saint Nick - Brian Wilson & Mike Love should sue.12. The Christmas Song - A nice finale for that beautiful voice. Pacing is lovely.I would suggest listening to the samples and--hey, if you love the album, then collect the whole set. But if you only find a few worthy candidates like I did, download the singles.3Has a mellow, unique theme, but heavy use of voice echoingI LOVE Zooey Deschanel's voice, so I was super psyched when I saw she had a Christmas album. It is very low-key with sort of an island theme (features a ukelele). The part that I was not a fan of was the echo. There is heavy use of voice echo in this album, and I am just not a fan of that technique. To me it takes away from the singer's voice, and in this case, that is really disappointing since her voice is so lovely. I listen to a few songs, but most of it just sits in my library.3Everyone should own thisI wish that M Ward and Zooey Deschanel were my parents. I'm pretty sure I'm too old for them to biologically be my parents but it's still a dream that I have when I listen to this album. I'll settle on friendship. This makes me want to go through the effort of performing contortionist moves in order to fit into a vintage dress (seriously even the chubby ones had unrealistic waist sizes back in the day) and sip on eggnog (ah the reason for my puffy waist) and spend hours cutting and glueing stuff onto holiday cards that will just be tossed out on December 26th.5This is my Christmas Heaven! Makes me so happy and warm insideI love Zooey's voice and portlandia charm. This album is perfect if you're looking for a new take on old traditional songs!5Very nice, very elegantZooey's voice is pure silk. I'm not overly famliar with M. Ward, but no complaints, and an excellent compliment to Zooey, who really dominates the album (which is fine by me as it's her voice that inspired me to purchase this collection). This is a very relaxing recording, with an old school, almost blusey feel to it. The only reason it gets 4 stars instead of five is that, for my tastes, I like a Christmas collection to include something religious, something about Christ (after all, that is what Christmas is celebrating). Including something like Three Kings or Silent Night or Come All Ye Faithful would have been a nice and tasteful addition to an otherwise great selection of songs. Also, it CD runs a bit "short" at only 32 minutes depsite featuring 12 songs.Overall, would definately recommend.4Expecting sound from "Elf", this is more jazzy and somberThis is a great collection and Zooey does a good job of channeling some really interesting genres to achieve a very eclectic unusual Christmas album. I got this for my husband, who loved her voice in the movie "Elf". We were expecting something a little more upbeat. We still listened to it multiple times, but I'm a lover of really traditional, even cheesy Christmas music, so I could see this album being better received by, for example, my very artsy atheist West Coasty parents. I would recommend downloading one song digitally before purchasing the entire album. Still, it's great, they made an album that is truly worth being made because it isn't just another boring Christmas album, and it definitely serves to mix up the generic holiday tunes. If you remember her music in the movie "Yes Man", you'll have a better idea of what to expect from this. The CD packaging is very cute, looks like a holiday card. Overall, very charming, "She & Him" are very talented musicians.4
